The Garden of Abdul Gasazi

Yesterday, we began our novel study on Chris Van Allsburg. Today, we read the story The Garden of Abdul Gasazi. While reading this story, we had a short debate on whether the magician, Abdul Gasazi, turned the dog, Fritz, into a duck or whether he tricked the boy.
What do you think happened? Did the magician turn the dog into a duck? Or, did he trick Alan into thinking he turned Fritz into a duck? Why do you think so?

I think he was tricked. I think he sent Fritz home and replaced him with a duck. I think that because you can't really turn a dog into a duck!

I think Alan was tricked because if Fritzs was home then he found his way home so he was tricked.
